SLOANE SCOTT

THINK GOD

In the picture, your hands point
to your temples as you stand in front

of the road sign, squinting as if
in deep thought or prayer. For one week,

the town of Pacific acquired a pair
of trans and lesbian lovebirds. We flitted

where there was to flit: the bar and old
railroad, the patch of wild rye I ran

my fingers though like hair. Nearby,
in front of her house, a white oak

you identified for an old woman
getting married soon. It’s important

to know these things beforehand,
she said, like an acorn held close

to the chest for safekeeping. From the top
of the mountain the toy town

in miniature. I could close one eye
and hold out my fingers, rearranging

what I wanted: finches over the church,
understory trees grown into canopy.
