Letter from the Editors

Midwest Review is a geographic endeavor, and that’s rare. While other magazines have to create their identities, ours seems ready-made. But how fixed is any identity? We outline our Midwest hazily, the way a shadow of bees suggests a hive. All of our editors have Midwestern ties, and our contributors select a Midwest state to stamp their bios. Some of these connections are lifelong while some are fleeting. This buzzing activity shifts with each issue and reshapes the place we call home.

This activity matters. The one definition we claim for the Midwest is that it is living.

So we say of this living time, from this living Midwest: Write boldly. Live largely. Relish beauty. Resist.
